India and Bangladesh have pledged to strengthen collaboration in critical domains, including security, trade, and regional connectivity. During the ‘India-Bangladesh Foreign Office Consultations,’ representatives from both nations, Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra for India and Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen for Bangladesh, engaged in discussions. The talks encompassed the Teesta river dispute, water-sharing agreements, and various issues, reflecting the comprehensive nature of the dialogue.
The meeting addressed not only trade and security but also delved into people-to-people ties, development cooperation in Bangladesh, and broader discussions on sub-regional, regional, and multilateral affairs. The Indian side commended Bangladesh’s active participation in global summits. The joint efforts highlighted shared objectives, with both countries expressing satisfaction over the progress made in 2023.
The Bangladesh Foreign Ministry’s statement outlined key issues raised by Foreign Secretary Momen, such as the early finalization of the Teesta agreement, resolution of water-sharing treaties, trade barriers removal for Bangladeshi exports, and seeking India’s assistance in addressing the Rohingya crisis. Both sides underscored their commitment to enhancing cooperation in development, trade, regional connectivity, power grids, security, water-related matters, and cultural affairs. The institutionalized Foreign Office Consultations serve as a vital platform for reviewing and advancing the entire spectrum of bilateral relations, with Bangladesh set to host the next session.
