Kashmir faces cold wave as Srinagar records 0.9°C

Most places in Kashmir experienced a rise in temperatures above freezing point last night, bringing relief from the cold and fog, according to officials on Friday. Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a minimum temperature of 0.9 degrees Celsius, marking the first time in five days that the minimum temperature stayed above freezing point in the city. Other areas like Bandipora, Baramulla, Ganderbal, Kokernag, Kulgam, and Kupwara also recorded minimum temperatures ranging from zero degrees Celsius to 1.7 degrees Celsius. Pahalgam, a tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, registered the coldest temperature in the valley at minus 3.3 degrees Celsius, followed by Shopian at minus 2.5 degrees Celsius. Gulmarg, the ski resort in north Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 2.0 degrees Celsius.

The reduction in early morning fog is attributed to the rise in minimum temperature, facilitated by the arrival of a western disturbance that is expected to impact the system. This change in weather conditions is providing some respite to residents who have experienced colder temperatures and fog in recent days. The improvement in temperatures across various regions in Kashmir, including Srinagar, is likely to ease the harsh winter conditions temporarily.
