Researchers have made a significant discovery in Peru, unearthing mummified remains of children at a site linked to the Ychsma culture on the country’s central coast. The findings, revealed on Monday (Nov 20), mark a significant archaeological revelation.
The site in Peru where the mummies of four children were found is in close proximity to residences and a field used by a professional Peruvian soccer team for training, according to the Associated Press. The hill where the mummies were discovered had been covered in debris, and excavators spent months clearing the site.
The specific location of the mummies’ discovery was at the base of a staircase on a small hill believed to have once concealed a temple in Lima. Experts suggest that the temple likely dates back some 3,500 years. Luis Takuda, an archaeologist in Lima’s Rimac district, emphasized the area’s significance as a ceremonial chamber. He noted that during the Ychsma period, the people considered it a sacred space, leading to the burial of their dead at the site.
Remarkably, the mummies’ skulls still retained traces of hair, as mentioned by Takuda. This detail provides additional insights into the preservation of these ancient remains.
