Rescue efforts are urgently underway in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district, where 41 workers have been trapped in the collapsed Silkyara tunnel for the past 12 days. Despite facing uncertainties and obstacles, the rescue team is working tirelessly to open a portion of the tunnel to create a safe passage. However, drilling operations have temporarily ceased due to issues with the Auger drill machine’s base, which is undergoing reinforcement.
Neeraj Khairwal, the Secretary, stated that work is ongoing to strengthen the base, and once completed, drilling will resume, with expectations of success by noon. An official source explained that the machine experienced displacement due to heavy jerks during drilling, necessitating the reinforcement of its base. Colonel Deepak Patil, overseeing the rescue operation, detailed the current strategy, involving lowering the machine with CTA bolts, extracting the Auger machine, and subsequently employing manual tools for digging and steel cutting within the tunnel. Despite challenges, the rescue team remains committed to safely retrieving the trapped workers.
