The Rajasthan High Court dealt a blow to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday by annulling the summons issued to Mevaram Jain, the Congress candidate from Barmer in the Assembly elections. The court deemed the ED’s action during the election campaign as “inappropriate” and questioned the necessity of Jain’s presence in Jaipur, which is 500 km away from his constituency. Jain, a three-time Congress MLA from Barmer, is currently contesting in the elections, while the ED investigates a money laundering case linked to a sextortion racket.
Presenting the petition on behalf of Jain, senior advocate Vikas Balia argued that the summons issued on November 20, instructing Jain to appear before the ED’s Jaipur office on November 22, should be revoked. The petitioner emphasized the ongoing election activities and the logistical challenges of traveling 500 km during the campaign. Justice Farzand Ali, presiding over the single bench, agreed, noting that a seven-day postponement of the summons would have no impact on the money laundering case.
