Two civil police officers from Nedumkandam station face suspension for declining to transport two severely injured youths, victims of a road accident, to the hospital in the police jeep. District Police Chief Vishnu Pratheep T K ordered an inquiry and was dissatisfied with the officers’ explanation.
Kattappana DySP V A Nishadmon informed that the suspended officers, Azad M and Ajeesh KR, claimed they had parked the jeep nearby for the rescue operation, but bystanders opted for an autorickshaw. Unsatisfied with their explanation, the district police chief ordered their suspension.
CCTV footage revealed a pick-up van colliding with the bike, prompting onlookers to carry the injured to the police jeep returning from Peerumedu sub-jail. The officers allegedly refused, suggesting an autorickshaw. One victim had leg fractures, the other a head injury. Media coverage triggered public outrage, as the injured were eventually transported in an autorickshaw to the nearest hospital and later shifted to Kochi for specialized treatment.
