The Qatar court’s acceptance of India’s appeal brings relief to the government, challenging the death penalty imposed on eight former Indian Navy personnel. These individuals, employed by Al Dahra company, faced charges of espionage, leading to their arrest in Doha last August.
The accused, including Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Captain Saurabh Vasisht, Commander Amit Nagpal, Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, and Sailor Ragesh, received the death penalty on October 26. The specific charges were not disclosed by Qatari authorities.
Expressing significant concern, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) underscored the case’s importance, emphasizing its exploration of all legal avenues. The MEA committed to providing ongoing consular and legal support to the affected Indians.
India’s ambassador to Qatar visited the detainees on October 1, securing consular access and addressing the complexities of the case.
