Renowned Malayalam writer P Valsala laid to rest with state honours

On Friday, Malayalam writer P Valsala, aged 85, was laid to rest with state honors in a ceremony held at the electric crematorium at West Hill around 4 pm. The final rites were performed by her son, Arun Maroli. Valsala passed away on Tuesday night at a private hospital in Mukkom.

Numerous public figures paid their respects to the renowned writer during the cremation ceremony. Additional District Magistrate represented Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Tourism Minister Mohammed Riyas, laying a wreath in homage. CP Aboobacker and Asokan Charuvil from the Kerala Sahitya Akademi, where Valsala had served as chairperson, also paid their respects. Various dignitaries, including Kozhikode Mayor Beena Philip, Thottathil Raveendran MLA, and writers K P Ramanunni, V R Sudheesh, K T Kunhikkannan, Asokan Charuvil, and Babu Parassery, were among those present to honor her memory. Valsala, an accomplished author, received several literary awards, including the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, Ezhuthachan Puraskaram, and Muttathu Varkey Award. She leaves behind a legacy of 17 novels and over 25 anthologies of short stories. Earlier in the day, her mortal remains were displayed for public homage at her residence in Vellimadukunnu and the Town Hall.
