Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, announced on Friday that the government is ready to aid citizens in filing FIRs against social media platforms found in violation of IT rules. Social media companies have been given a seven-day deadline to align their terms of use with the specified IT rules. Following discussions with representatives from these platforms, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) will establish a dedicated portal allowing users to report IT rule violations.
This platform is designed for users to report objectionable and misleading content, including deepfakes or CSAM (child sexual abuse material) found on social media platforms. FIRs will be filed against intermediaries, and if they reveal the content’s origin, the entity responsible for posting the content will also face FIRs. Minister Chandrasekhar emphasized a zero-tolerance approach towards IT rule violations in the country and assured that Meity would facilitate users in reporting violations and filing FIRs. Additionally, social media platforms were informed that MeitY would appoint a Rule 7 officer to create a user-friendly platform for citizens to easily report law violations by these platforms, with the officer responding accordingly.
