Allegations of Sexual Harassment Surface at Central University of Kerala

First-year MA English students accuse Assistant Professor Dr Efthikar Ahamed of turning poetry class into explicit discussions. Accusations include inappropriate behavior towards a semi-conscious student on November 13. The complaint, signed by 33 of 41 students, details 31 instances of misconduct.

Efforts to ensure student safety were initiated on November 16, with the Head of the Department requesting Dr Ahamed to stay away from teaching responsibilities. However, concerns arise as he continues to engage with students despite the ongoing investigation. Various student organizations, including NSUI, SFI, ABVP, ASA, and others, call for Dr Ahamed’s termination, expressing doubts about the effectiveness of the Internal Complaints Committee.

The incident on November 13 involved a collapsed student during an examination. The complaint alleges inappropriate touching by Dr Ahamed during attempts to revive her, both in the examination hall and later at the university health centre. The female medical officer corroborates the student’s discomfort and the professor’s inappropriate behavior, emphasizing the need for a safe environment.

As the investigation unfolds, the students and concerned organizations advocate for Dr Ahamed’s suspension to ensure a conducive learning environment. The gravity of the situation prompts demands for thorough scrutiny and appropriate actions to maintain the university’s integrity and student welfare.
