Police Attribute Tragedy to Arrangement Failures in CUSAT Stampede

A special team, led by Thrikkakkara ACP, has initiated an investigation into the tragic stampede at the CUSAT campus, claiming four lives. The police, registering a case for unnatural death, attribute the incident to lapses in program arrangements. The probe team is poised to hold organizers accountable and has started gathering witness statements. A comprehensive inquiry, set to begin Sunday, will involve more statements and evidence collection.

The stampede unfolded during a music concert by Nikhita Gandhi, part of CUSAT’s annual tech fest ‘Dhishna.’ Higher Education Minister R Bindhu has mandated a three-member team to investigate, comprising the principal secretary of higher education, the vice-chancellor, and registrar of Cochin University. The minister emphasizes a thorough inquiry and expects a detailed report.

Autopsies for the deceased, three CUSAT students (Athul Thampi, Ann Ruftha, Sara Thomas), and Alwin Joseph from Palakkad, will take place on Sunday. The university hosted a public homage, and funeral arrangements are scheduled in their respective hometowns. The tragic incident occurred when rain disrupted the concert, prompting those waiting outside to rush in, leading to a chaotic stampede and the subsequent loss of lives.
