A dedicated team led by Thrikkakkara ACP is delving into the tragic stampede at the CUSAT campus that resulted in four lives lost last Saturday. Police have officially registered a case for unnatural death, citing lapses in the event’s arrangements as contributing factors.
The investigation team, headed by Thrikkakkara ACP, is considering holding the event organizers accountable, with witness statements forming a crucial part of their inquiry. The case was officially registered on Saturday, and a more comprehensive investigation will commence on Sunday, involving additional witness statements and evidence collection from the accident site.
The unfortunate incident unfolded in an open-air auditorium during a music concert featuring Nikhita Gandhi as part of the ‘Dhishna’ Tech Fest.
Responding to the gravity of the situation, State Higher Education Minister R Bindhu has mandated a thorough investigation by a three-member team. This team comprises the principal secretary of higher education, along with the vice-chancellor and registrar of Cochin University. Their inquiry aims to shed light on the circumstances leading to the stampede, and a detailed report is expected.
The stampede occurred just before Nikita Gandhi’s performance at the musical festival in the open-air auditorium. In the wake of this tragedy, the autopsy of the four victims—Athul Thampi from Koothattukulam, Ann Rifta from Paravur, Sara Thomas from Thamarassery, and Alwin Joseph from Palakkad—will be conducted at Kalamassery Government Medical College and Ernakulam General Hospital on Sunday morning. These three students and one spectator lost their lives in the stampede, underscoring the profound impact of the incident on the community.
