In yet another alarming flight incident, a woman passenger, reportedly under the influence of methamphetamine, attempted to open the emergency door while the plane was flying over the Pacific Ocean on Thursday (Nov 23), according to local reports.
The Incheon International Airport Police Corps detained the 26-year-old woman after her attempt to open the door on a Korean Air flight destined for Incheon, a South Korean city near Seoul, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.
The flight, concluding its 15-hour journey from New York after departing at 2 am (local time) the previous day, witnessed the woman exhibiting signs of anxiety about 10 hours into the flight. She made several attempts to open the exit door before flight attendants finally restrained her, as recounted by witnesses.
Following the incident, drug screening revealed that the woman tested positive for methamphetamine, according to information shared by airport officials with the Korea JoongAng Daily. She is now under investigation by the Incheon International Airport Police for violations of the Aviation Security Act and drug abuse under the Narcotics Control Act.
During the investigation, the woman, identified as Ms. A, was reportedly babbling. A police official mentioned, “We have requested a detailed appraisal from the National Forensic Service to confirm the type and amount of drugs she took,” as reported by media.
The police clarified that the woman had entered the country after a stay of more than six months in New York, and there is no recorded history of mental illness.
This incident marks the third attempt by a passenger to open emergency doors on Korean flights this year, including a previous case involving a 19-year-old who, under the influence of drugs, was sentenced to three years in imprisonment.
