Former England national soccer team and Tottenham Hotspur manager, Terry Venables, has passed away at the age of 80 after battling a prolonged illness, as confirmed by his family on Sunday.
Renowned for guiding England to the semifinals of the 1996 European Championship, where they faced a heartbreaking defeat to Germany on penalties, Venables left an indelible mark on the football world. His managerial career included successful stints at Tottenham, where he secured the FA Cup in the 1990-91 season, as well as tenures with Crystal Palace, Leeds United, and Barcelona.
In a heartfelt statement, his family expressed their profound grief, saying, “We are totally devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father who passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness.”
Venables, a former midfielder who commenced his career at Chelsea, made two international appearances for England. His playing days also saw him don the jerseys of Tottenham, with an FA Cup triumph in 1967, along with Queens Park Rangers and Crystal Palace.
