Hardik Pandya returns to Mumbai Indians

On Sunday, India’s T20I captain, Hardik Pandya, made a return to his “spiritual home,” Mumbai Indians, after a dramatic all-cash deal trade-off with Gujarat Titans concluded formally, capping 72 hours of intense developments. As the IPL retention window closed at 5 pm, Gujarat Titans included their IPL-winning captain in the retention list, causing a stir. However, formal paperwork delays led to neither the IPL nor BCCI approving the anticipated move during the transfer season.

Following the retention window closure, it was revealed that Hardik’s trade-off was finalized, making him a Mumbai Indians player. The tripartite all-cash deal involved trading all-rounder Cameron Green to RCB, freeing up funds for the deal with Gujarat Titans. Green, acquired by MI for Rs 17.5 crore in the last auction, was crucial for funding the acquisition of Hardik. Pandya, initially picked by Gujarat Titans before the 2022 auction, played a pivotal role as their captain, leading them to consecutive finals with a championship win in the maiden year.

Mumbai Indians strategically brought in Pandya with a long-term vision, considering the upcoming mega auction in 2025. Despite this, the leadership dynamic within the franchise, particularly with Rohit Sharma as ODI and Test captain, remains a point of interest. Insiders suggested that Pandya’s desire to return to Mumbai Indians, where he gained prominence over seven seasons, was fueled by the allure of captaining IPL’s most popular franchise and expanding his brand as a national skipper.
