Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled for a two-day visit to Dubai this week, attending the World Climate Action Summit, as disclosed by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Sunday. The visit, taking place from November 30 to December 1, comes at the invitation of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of Abu Dhabi.
The World Climate Action Summit serves as the high-level component of the 28th Conference of Parties (COP-28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), occurring in Dubai from November 28 to December 12 under the UAE’s presidency.
During the Summit, PM Modi is slated to engage in bilateral meetings with various leaders. His participation follows his physical attendance at COP 26 in Glasgow, where he introduced India’s distinctive climate action plan, “Panchamrit,” and unveiled the Mission Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE).
The MEA emphasizes that climate change has been a pivotal focus of India’s G20 Presidency, with significant strides reflected in the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration. COP-28 is seen as an opportunity to build upon these accomplishments. Notably, the world grapples with escalating global temperatures, reaching record highs and nearing the critical 1.5 degrees Celsius threshold agreed upon by nations. Persistent growth in greenhouse gas emissions remains a substantial and concerning contributor to this challenge.
