Udhayanidhi set to take on deputy CM role: Senior DMK Official

As the DMK meticulously prepares to celebrate Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin’s birthday, there are widespread speculations about his imminent promotion within both the government and the party.

Currently serving as one of the ministers in the 35-member cabinet under Chief Minister MK Stalin, Udhayanidhi also holds the position of secretary in the DMK’s youth wing, one of the party’s 23 wings. Despite the relatively modest nature of these roles, the DMK is investing efforts to mark Udhayanidhi’s birthday as special, positioning him as the apparent successor to Stalin. A senior state-level DMK functionary expressed confidence in Udhayanidhi’s wide acceptance among party cadres, attributing it to his hard work and cadre-friendly approach. Expectations are high for an official announcement, including his elevation to deputy chief minister, during the DMK’s youth wing conference on December 17 in Salem.

The party’s official organ, Murasoli, strategically employs language in advertisements, coupled with extensive coverage of Udhayanidhi, to prepare the cadre for a forthcoming announcement. Republishing letters from DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, written in 2007 before elevating Stalin, adds historical context to the anticipation. The move is seen as an effort to resonate with the state’s large base of young voters, positioning Udhayanidhi’s ascent as a strategic move for electoral success. Political analysts, like Raghavendra Ara, observe that the party leadership’s intentions are evident, especially through Udhayanidhi’s active representation of the CM and the publication of historical letters, signaling an imminent development.
