Apple representatives are expected to engage with CERT-In, a cybersecurity unit within the Ministry of Electronics and IT, during the initial week of December 2023. The scheduled meeting aims to address concerns related to warning messages indicating iPhone hacking attempts sent to Indian parliamentarians. Originally slated for the end of this month, the Apple cybersecurity executives are now anticipated to arrive in India early next month.
On November 24, 2023, parliamentarians, including Priyanka Chaturvedi (Shiv Sena), Mahua Moitra (Trinamool Congress), Raghav Chadha (Aam Aadmi Party), and Shashi Tharoor (Congress), shared screenshots of warning messages suggesting state-sponsored hacking attempts on their social media platforms. Allegations were made against the government for conducting surveillance, but officials dismissed these claims. The government urged Apple’s involvement in the investigation to ascertain the origins of these messages.
Minister of Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, clarified that the government solicited Apple’s participation to obtain authentic information on the alleged state-sponsored attacks. The collaborative effort between Apple and CERT-In is crucial for unraveling the motives behind the hacking warnings and addressing concerns raised by the parliamentarians regarding potential surveillance.
