ESIC nurses frustrated over new transfer policy and staff shortage

Nurses employed in hospitals operated by the Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, express discontent with their working conditions, primarily stemming from a newly implemented transfer policy. The policy dictates that ESIC nurses must undergo mandatory relocation after nine years of service in a specific region.

Jodhraj Bairwa, the secretary-general of the All India ESIC Nursing Officers’ Federation, voices concerns, stating that while they accept transfers according to regulations, the government should consider allowing nurses to choose their preferred stations when vacancies are available. Highlighting that over 90% of the nurses are female, Bairwa emphasizes that the policy poses significant inconvenience to them.

ESIC transfers are categorized into three types: tenure completion transfers, request transfers, and transfers on compassionate grounds. The nursing community advocates for prioritizing request transfers over tenure completion transfers. They propose that no nursing official should be compulsorily relocated based on tenure completion, and those willing to transfer to a preferred region should be granted permission if vacancies exist, fostering improved communication and enhanced patient care.
