Study claims that billions of people will be displaced within the next 25 years due to climate change

Prior to the COP28 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Dubai, a recent study has asserted that billions of individuals could face displacement within the next 25 years due to the severe consequences of climate change. The escalating impacts of climate change have exacerbated the severity of various natural disasters, spanning floods and wildfires to landslides and cloud bursts.

Published by Ipsos earlier this week, the study disclosed that almost four in 10 people harbor concerns about losing their homes due to climate change-related impacts. The Ipsos study, conducted between September 22 and October 6, encompassed responses from over 24,000 individuals across 31 countries.

The findings indicate that a significant 38 percent of those surveyed anticipate being displaced in the next 25 years due to climate change-related impacts. If considered representative of the global population, the survey results suggest that over two billion people worldwide fear displacement due to climate change.

Analyzing concerns by country, individuals in Turkey, Brazil, and India expressed the highest levels of worry about losing their homes due to climate change impacts.

Conversely, among the surveyed nations, people in the Netherlands exhibited the lowest level of concern regarding potential displacement due to climate change. Only 19 percent of Dutch respondents believed that they might face displacement within the next 25 years due to the impacts of climate change.
