US grants all-time high of 140,000 visas to Indian students in the past year

The United States issued an unprecedented 140,000 visas to Indian students last year as part of the Biden administration’s efforts to strengthen people-to-people ties between the two nations. Julie Stufft, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Visa Services, highlighted the commitment to reducing the wait period for visa appointments by working diligently to facilitate interviews for students before the commencement of their classes. This year witnessed a substantial focus on addressing the demand from India, and the U.S. set a historic goal to issue one million visas in the country, achieving it several months ahead of schedule. The remarkable numbers also extended to workers, crew members, and students applying from India for various visa categories. India has become the largest source country for foreign students in the United States, emphasizing the significance of this relationship. The U.S. made efforts to streamline the process by waiving interviews for Indian travelers who had previously visited and were returning to the U.S. Last year, the U.S. issued over 140,000 visas to Indian students, marking a record in this category.
