The imminent landfall of Severe Cyclone Michaung near Bapatla around 1 p.m. has prompted high alert measures in Andhra Pradesh. The cyclone is anticipated to move parallel to the coastline, with wind speeds at the time of landfall ranging between 90 to 100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph. The state government has proactively implemented precautionary measures to mitigate potential damage and safeguard lives. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Severe Cyclone Michaung was positioned 80 km south-southwest of Bapatla, 140 km south-southwest of Machilipatnam, and 80 km north-northeast of Nellore, moving at a speed of 12 kmph.
Tragically, a 35-year-old police constable, Satya Kumar, from the 11th Battalion in Bhakharapeta, Kadapa district, lost his life when an uprooted tree fell on him as he was en route to duty on his motorcycle. Heavy rains have been impacting the region due to the cyclone, leading to rough seas in Suryalanka, with waves reaching 2 meters along the coast. Coastal areas, including Bapatla, Repalle, and Nizampatnam, have experienced a surge in sea levels. Preparedness measures in Bapatla include the relocation of over 800 individuals from low-lying areas in Nizampatnam and Repalle to 13 cyclone relief camps. With over 50 special teams on standby for potential rescue operations, authorities are anticipating a critical situation in the coming hours. A tenth warning signal has been issued at Nizampatnam port, cautioning against rough seas, and tourists are advised to avoid Suryalanka beach on Tuesday to prevent untoward incidents.
