Eleven climbers die in a volcanic eruption in Indonesia

Eleven climbers lost their lives in a volcanic eruption in Indonesia on Monday (Dec 4), leading authorities to halt their search for the remaining 12 missing individuals.

The eruption of the Marapi volcano in West Sumatra commenced on Sunday, trapping around 75 climbers, as reported by local media.

With the 2,891-meter-high volcano spewing ash up to 3 km (9,843 ft) into the air, authorities raised the alert level to the second-highest, prohibiting residents from approaching within 3 km (1.86 miles) of the crater.

A circulating video on social media depicted climbers being evacuated to a shelter, their faces and hair covered in volcanic dust and rain.

The falling ash blanketed several villages and obstructed sunlight, according to National Disaster Management Agency spokesperson Abdul Muhari.

In response, authorities distributed masks and advised residents to wear eyeglasses for protection against volcanic ash.

While the rescue operation successfully retrieved 28 climbers, efforts were initiated to locate and rescue the others.
