The most recent IMD update forecasts that the northern coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will witness light to moderate rainfall in most locations, with isolated heavy rainfall on Tuesday morning, gradually decreasing thereafter. This prediction offers a welcome respite following the havoc caused by Cyclone Michaung, which led to flooding and disruptions in normal life in Chennai and nearby districts on Monday. Residents in certain Chennai areas reported a cessation of rain since early Tuesday, along with restored power services, although train services to and from the city remain suspended.
According to the latest bulletin from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), coastal Andhra Pradesh will also experience light to moderate rainfall in most places. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is anticipated at a few locations, with extremely heavy falls expected in isolated areas over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on Tuesday. Additionally, exceptionally heavy rainfall is likely in one or two places over north coastal and adjoining south coastal Andhra Pradesh on December 5.
The bulletin provides details on the movement of the Severe Cyclonic Storm Michaung over the Westcentral Bay of Bengal. As of 0230 hours IST on Tuesday, the cyclone was positioned 20 km north-northeast of Nellore, 170 km north of Chennai, 150 km south of Bapatla, and 210 km south-southwest of Machilipatnam. The system is projected to move nearly northwards, parallel and close to the south Andhra Pradesh coast, making landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam during Tuesday forenoon as a Severe Cyclonic Storm with sustained winds of 90-100 kmph, gusting to 110 kmph.
