Singer Billie Eilish loses over 100,000 followers on Instagram a day after she addressed her sexuality

Singer Billie Eilish experienced a significant drop in Instagram followers, losing over 100,000 within a day after openly addressing her sexuality at Variety’s Hitmakers Brunch. The event, held on Saturday, featured Eilish acknowledging that she identifies as queer.

Over the past 30 days, the Grammy-winning artist reportedly lost 117,750 followers, with the majority opting to unfollow her on December 3. Specifically, Eilish saw a reduction of 40,428 Instagram followers in the aftermath of her Red Carpet interview, where she discussed her attraction to women.

During the interview, Eilish expressed surprise, stating that she thought her sexuality was “obvious” and admitting, “No I didn’t. But I kind of thought, ‘Wasn’t it obvious?’ I didn’t realise people didn’t know.”

The 21-year-old singer shared her perspective on the concept of coming out, stating, “I’m just like, ‘Why can’t we just exist?’ I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I just didn’t talk about it. Whoops.” She further conveyed her shock about articles discussing the loss of followers, saying, “I saw the article and I was like, oh… I guess… I came out today! OK cool.” Despite nervousness, she expressed excitement that people now knew and asserted her support for the LGBTQ+ community.

In response to Variety’s earlier issue that seemingly “outed” her, Eilish had previously criticized the magazine in an Instagram post. While thanking the publication for the award, she voiced her dissatisfaction with being “outed” on the red carpet and urged people to focus on matters that truly matter.
