Sylvester Stallone visits Philadelphia to celebrate the city’s inaugural Rocky Day

Sylvester Stallone visited Philadelphia to commemorate the city’s first Rocky Day, marking 50 years since the iconic character Rocky Balboa ascended the 72 steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art in the 1976 film “Rocky.” At 77 years old, Stallone, who gained immense fame after the release of the initial Rocky film, returned to the same spot to reflect on the genesis of a cultural phenomenon.

Addressing the crowd from the famous steps, Stallone expressed gratitude to the residents of Philadelphia, whom he hailed as the true heroes. He thanked them for embodying the spirit of Rocky by living life on their terms, striving to do their best, and persevering through challenges. Stallone remarked, “I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart — and Rocky’s, too, because we’re very close — to all of you, who believe it or not are the real-life Rockys because you live your life on your terms, you try to do the best you can, and you keep punching.”

Sylvester Stallone’s rise to fame was meteoric after the release of the first Rocky film, where he not only portrayed the titular character but also penned the screenplay. Rocky, a tale of a small-town boxer intricately linked to the city’s essence, resonated with audiences. Reflecting on those times, Stallone shared, “I was very ambitious because there was no plan B. At the time, all I had to fall back on was my butt. Rocky was just a perfect storm. It came along at a time when politics were changing and people were looking for more positivity, and I just happened to fall into it.”

He emphasized the symbolic significance of standing atop the steps, conveying the feeling of being a champion of one’s dreams and the real victory of never giving up, urging individuals to persevere for themselves and their loved ones. The film “Rocky” earned three Academy Awards at the 1977 ceremony, including the coveted Best Picture award.
