Victims of Manipur ‘Gunfight’ Identified: 13 Bodies Recognized

The identities of the 13 individuals, including at least five teenagers, who tragically lost their lives in a gunfight involving unidentified armed individuals in Manipur on Monday, have been disclosed. The incident occurred at Leithao village near Saibol in the Tengnoupal district, an area marked by ethnic tensions and sharing a porous border with Myanmar.

As per a statement on X, previously known as Twitter, Manipur police reported that the 13 individuals were “killed in a gunfight between unknown armed miscreants” at Leithao village. The police initiated a case and are actively conducting an investigation.

Subsequent to the recovery of the bodies, the police transported them to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences in the state capital Imphal. The bereaved families voiced their anger over the incident and criticized the state government for its failure to safeguard lives. In a collective decision, the grieving families opted to conduct the final rites at Andro in the Imphal East district. Expressing concern over the incident, the Congress party, through leader Jairam Ramesh, highlighted that seven months have passed, yet the situation in Manipur remains far from normal.
