Over the past three years, the issue of stray dogs has seen a notable escalation in the country, with the most recent data indicating that an average of six individuals experience dog bites every minute in India. Furthermore, India has emerged as the global epicenter for deaths related to rabies, constituting over one-third of the total worldwide fatalities due to the disease.
The incidence of daily dog bites has witnessed a steady increase since 2021, nearly doubling over the course of the last three years. Parshottam Rupala, the Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, relayed to the Parliament that between January and October 2023, there were a reported 24.7 lakh dog bite cases from various regions across the country.
In response to a query from parliament member Pratima Mondal, Minister Rupala acknowledged sporadic reports of dog attacks occurring in different parts of India. He further indicated that data provided by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, specifically from the National Centre for Disease Control, reflects a decrease in the number of dog attacks when compared to the figures from 2018.
