In the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, Mallikarjun Kharge, the Leader of the Opposition, urged the Central government to allocate Rs 18,171 crore from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) to address the severe drought conditions in Karnataka. Kharge emphasized that Karnataka is currently experiencing its most severe drought in 123 years, causing an estimated crop damage of over Rs 35,162 crore, with crop losses ranging from 40-90 percent. The Congress president stressed the urgent need for financial support from the NDRF to provide input subsidies, relief, and immediate growth measures in response to the low rainfall in the state. Kharge also highlighted the critically low water levels in various reservoirs, posing a potential drinking water shortage in the days to come. He mentioned flood situations in parts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, and accused the BJP of neglecting people’s issues after winning elections.
Additionally, Congress member Amee Yajnik addressed concerns about women’s safety, emphasizing the strict implementation of laws related to it. BJP member Ashok Bajpai raised issues regarding the safety of on-duty doctors, proposing the establishment of medical tribunals through a model law to assist doctors facing legal cases. Congress MP Rajeev Shukla called for judicial reforms to address the plight of undertrials in the country’s jails, while his party colleague Imran Pratapgarhi urged the government to focus on improving train facilities.
