Tamil Nadu requests Rs 5,000 Crore central aid for Cyclone Michaung

Tamil Nadu has formally requested interim financial assistance of Rs 5,060 crore from the Central government to address the damages inflicted by Cyclone Michaung, as stated by the state government on Wednesday. An ongoing survey is currently assessing the comprehensive extent of the destruction, and a comprehensive report will be compiled subsequently, leading to the pursuit of additional funds, according to an official release.

In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, Chief Minister M K Stalin outlined the severe impact of the “unprecedented” rainfall induced by the cyclone in northern districts, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpet. Particularly, areas under the Corporation of Chennai have experienced significant damage, with infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and public buildings severely affected, impacting the livelihoods of a large population.

Chief Minister Stalin’s detailed communication to PM Modi seeks an interim relief package of Rs 5,060 crore across various categories to address the pressing needs arising from the cyclone’s aftermath. The release further notes that DMK MP TR Baalu will be delivering the letter to the Prime Minister. Additionally, the Chief Minister has requested the deployment of a central team to assess the extent of the damage comprehensively.
