Telangana reports highest cybercrime cases in 2022: NCRB

Telangana recorded the highest number of cybercrime cases in 2022, reaching 15,297, marking a significant increase from 5,024 cases in 2020 and 10,303 in 2021, as per the latest data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The upward trend in cybercrime in the state is evident in the analysis of NCRB data. Among the 28 states, Telangana topped the list for cybercrime incidents, followed by Karnataka with 12,556 cases and Uttar Pradesh with 10,117 cases in 2022. Collectively, the 28 states reported a total of 64,907 cybercrime cases last year.

The data also revealed that Telangana’s rate of cybercrime cases per lakh population stood at 40.3, with a charge sheet filed in 17.1% of the cases. Specific cybercrime categories included 624 cases of ATM frauds, 3,223 online banking frauds, 2,179 OTP frauds, 4,467 cheating frauds, 280 instances of cyber stalking, and 234 cases of cyber blackmailing or threatening. The primary motives behind 10,991 cases were fraud, followed by extortion in 447 cases, as indicated by the data.
