The swearing-in of the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) government in Mizoram is scheduled for Friday, marking a historic shift in power as the ZPM dethroned the Mizo National Front (MNF). This signifies the first instance of a non-MNF and non-Congress government taking charge in the landlocked state. A meeting of the “Val Upa Council,” ZPM’s decision-making body, was convened in Aizawl on Tuesday, where all party MLAs were expected to attend. Lalduhoma, a prominent figure in the ZPM and former Indian Police Service officer, is set to become the chief minister, with plans to meet Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati on Wednesday to stake the claim for government formation.
Lalduhoma expressed that the state’s youth were disillusioned with the existing political system, anticipating a transformation under new leadership and principles. He attributed the MNF’s defeat to outgoing Chief Minister Zoramthanga, highlighting the ZPM’s strong support from women in the elections. With a notable victory, securing 27 out of 40 seats, the ZPM emerged as the dominant force, relegating the MNF to a distant second with 10 seats, followed by the BJP with two and Congress with one. Zoramthanga, former insurgent leader turned politician, resigned as MNF president, taking moral responsibility for the party’s electoral setback.
