Ernakulam Range DIG Putta Vimaladitya suspended K A Nazeer, the sub-inspector of Upputhara Police Station in Idukki, on Wednesday over allegations of accepting a bribe from a relative of an accused in an attempted murder case. The incident unfolded on November 13 when Satheesh Babu, a resident of Marykulam, reportedly assaulted an individual involved in a roadside altercation, causing injuries with a machete. Despite going into hiding, a case was registered against Babu.
Three days later, Babu’s relatives approached SI Nazeer, urging him to favor the accused in his report. Nazeer allegedly accepted a bribe of Rs 10,000 during a meeting at his residence. Following this, the accused surrendered the next day and was remanded for 12 days. The police intelligence wing brought the bribery matter to attention, leading to an inquiry ordered by Idukki Police Chief Vishnu Pratheep TK. Kattappana DySP V A Nishadmon conducted the investigation and subsequently recommended the suspension of SI Nazeer based on the findings. The suspension comes as a consequence of Nazeer’s alleged misconduct in accepting the bribe to influence the case in favor of the accused relative.
