Karnataka CM orders of special court for Gauri Lankesh and Kalburgi murder trials

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah issued directives on Wednesday to officials, urging them to take steps in establishing a special court dedicated to expeditiously adjudicating the cases related to the killings of Gauri Lankesh and M M Kalburgi.

Gauri Lankesh, a journalist with left-leaning views, was fatally shot in September 2017 in an incident allegedly connected to the same group responsible for the murder of the renowned litterateur Kalburgi, who was killed two years prior at his residence in Dharwad.

Siddaramaiah, in an administrative memorandum, acknowledged receiving concerns from Gauri’s sister, Kavitha Lankesh, and Kalburgi’s wife, Umadevi, highlighting the prolonged delay in the hearing of their cases. Responding to their plea for the establishment of a special court with a dedicated, full-time judge to oversee the proceedings, the Chief Minister instructed the Additional Chief Secretary responsible for internal administration to investigate the matter and take necessary actions. The aim is to expedite the legal proceedings for a swift resolution of these high-profile cases.
