Iconic character actor Junior Mehmood, renowned for his performances in classics such as “Caravan,” “Haathi Mere Saathi,” and “Mera Naam Joker,” passed away on Friday after a courageous battle with cancer, as confirmed by his son Hasnain. The 68-year-old actor had been in critical condition for 17 days, losing a significant amount of weight in a month. Junior Mehmood, originally named Naeem Sayyed, commenced his career as a child artist in films like “Mohabbat Zindagi Hai” (1966) and “Naunihal” (1967). Late comedy legend Mehmood bestowed him the moniker Junior Mehmood after their collaboration in the 1968 film “Suhag Raat.”
Suffering from stomach pain, Mehmood sought treatment locally before being taken to Tata Memorial Hospital, where he was diagnosed with cancer in the lung, liver, and a stomach tumor, coupled with jaundice. Esteemed director Sanjay Gupta and industry bodies, including Cine & TV Artistes’ Association (CINTAA), paid tribute to the versatile actor. In a career spanning over four decades and encompassing 260 films in seven languages, Junior Mehmood left an indelible mark. His memorable moments include recreating Mehmood’s iconic song “Hum Kaale Hain To Kya Hua” in “Brahmachari” and appearances on TV shows like “Pyaar Ka Dard Hai Meetha Meetha Pyaara Pyaara” and “Ek Rishta Saajhedari ka.” The actor’s burial is scheduled for later in the day at the Santa Cruz cemetery, where he will rest alongside other luminaries like Dilip Kumar and Mohammed Rafi. Junior Mehmood is survived by his wife and two sons.
