The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has taken the decision to suspend the primary membership of Dr. EA Ruwise, who is facing accusations in the case of Dr. AJ Shahana’s death. Dr. Ruwise, a member of the IMA, has been arrested by the police under the dowry prohibition act, accused of abetting the suicide of Dr. Shahana, a 26-year-old postgraduate student at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. The release from the IMA mentioned that Dr. Ruwise has been suspended from the membership pending a final decision, considering the serious nature of the allegations and his arrest.
Dr. Shahana took her own life after Dr. Ruwise, her fiancé, and his family allegedly demanded an exorbitant dowry ahead of their marriage. According to Shahana’s relatives, Ruwise’s family insisted on 150 sovereigns of gold, 15 acres of land, and a BMW car as dowry. Despite Shahana’s family offering a sum of 50 lakhs and 50 sovereigns of gold, the demands were not met. Distraught over Ruwise’s inability to oppose his family’s wishes, Shahana tragically took the extreme step.
