IPC issues alert on adverse reactions of painkiller Meftal

The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) issued a warning on Thursday regarding the widely used painkiller Meftal, advising individuals to consult a doctor before taking the drug. The alert emphasized that Meftal contains mefenamic acid, which has the potential to trigger adverse reactions such as DRESS syndrome. Meftal is commonly utilized to alleviate conditions like menstrual cramps and rheumatoid arthritis.

The advisory urged healthcare professionals, patients, and consumers to exercise caution and closely monitor the likelihood of adverse drug reactions (ADR) associated with the use of Meftal. The move comes in response to the increasing popularity of Meftal as a household painkiller, with individuals often using it without proper consideration for potential side effects to alleviate muscle and joint pain.

Meftal’s primary component is mefenamic acid, known for its pain-relieving properties in addressing issues like muscle and joint pain, as well as menstrual pain. Additionally, it has shown effectiveness in alleviating sore throats, nerve pain, and muscle aches. The alert serves as a precautionary measure to ensure responsible and informed use of Meftal, emphasizing the importance of consulting healthcare professionals before its consumption.
