The 28th International Film Festival of Kerala commenced in the state capital with an inauguration expressing solidarity with the people of war-torn Palestine. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who virtually inaugurated the festival, emphasized its unique commitment to standing in solidarity with the struggles of the Palestinian people. The festival conferred the ‘Spirit of Cinema’ Award on Kenyan artist Wanuri Kahiu, expressing the state’s commitment to supporting those advocating for freedom and expression. Mayor Arya Rajendran presented the award to Kahiu. Actor Nana Patekar, the chief guest, expressed eagerness to be part of Malayalam cinema. The eight-day festival expects over 12,000 delegates and will feature 175 international movies from 81 countries. The inaugural movie, ‘Good Bye Julia,’ marked Sudan’s first selection for the Cannes Film Festival. The festival includes anti-colonization, international competition, Malayalam cinema, and retrospective sections. Polish director Krzysztof Zanussi will receive the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award,’ and movies from Cuba will be featured in the ‘Country Focus’ section. The winner of the ‘Suvarna Chakoram’ award will receive a cash prize of Rs. 20 lakh. Additionally, cultural and art shows and a ‘Kerala Film Market’ are planned. The Kerala Film Development Corporation is organizing a cine expo at the main venue, Tagore Theatre.
