India continues backing global adaptation goal at COP28

During the conclusion of the first week of the 28th Conference of Parties (COP28), Indian delegates reiterated the importance of negotiated outcomes in climate negotiations and expressed support for the global goal of adaptation, considering it crucial for developing countries. Emphasizing their pivotal role in steering the negotiations, India highlighted the significance of decisions that not only strengthen the Global Stocktake (GST) but also restore trust in the entire multilateral climate process.

The assessment of the Paris Agreement’s implementation through the GST took center stage in discussions. India stressed the necessity of negotiated outcomes and an inclusive approach that aligns with the principles and processes of the Convention and the Paris Agreement. While expressing commitment to ambitious outcomes, Indian delegates underscored the importance of grounding ambition in principles of equity and feasibility on a nationally determined basis.

The commitment to an ambitious outcome extended to various agenda items, with particular emphasis on the Global Goal of Adaptation. Indian representatives emphasized that adaptation is a matter close to the hearts of developing countries and billions of people for whom adaptation is crucial for their future. This commitment reflects India’s dedication to addressing climate challenges within the framework of global cooperation and equity.
