The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to submit a revised action plan that outlines specific targets, timelines, and fund allocations for each sector to address the deteriorating air quality in Delhi during the winter. The NGT expressed dissatisfaction with the general observations made in the current report by CAQM, stating that many areas lack a detailed plan covering all districts with quantified targets. The NGT emphasized the need for a comprehensive action plan for the entire National Capital Region (NCR) to address the air shed, including neighboring areas.
The CAQM, in its report, identified contributing factors such as industrial pollution, pollution from diesel generator sets, pollution from thermal power plants within 300 km of Delhi, pollution from vehicles and the transport sector, agricultural stubble burning, municipal solid/plastic waste burning, biomass burning, fires in sanitary landfills, and other episodic events. The NGT granted three weeks for the submission of a revised report, setting the next hearing for January 3, 2024. The NCR, which includes cities like Gurugram, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad, will be covered under the common air shed, addressing air pollution challenges in a regional context.
