Workers of the Kerala Students’ Union (KSU), the student wing of the Congress party, reportedly threw shoes at the convoy of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan as it traveled from Perumbavoor to Kothamangalam. Following the incident, footage showed police using canes against the activists, while some unidentified persons attempted to attack the Congress workers. The Kuruppampady Police stated that a case would be registered against the protesters and those involved in the attack. In a separate incident, Perumbavoor MLA Eldhose Kunnappilly claimed he was assaulted by activists of DYFI, a Leftist students’ body, while admitting an injured Congress worker to a hospital. Perumbavoor Police registered a case in connection with that incident.
Congress workers have been protesting against the Chief Minister and his cabinet colleagues, who are on a state-wide Nava Kerala Sadas yatra, an outreach program by the Left government. The opposition party alleges that the government is utilizing state resources, funded by taxpayers, for the Left party’s political campaign.
