IMD: Delhi temperatures to drop further in coming weeks

Delhi experienced its coldest morning on Sunday, with the minimum temperature dropping to 8.3 degrees Celsius, one degree below normal. The maximum temperature also dipped to 23.4 degrees Celsius, one degree below normal. This marks the lowest night temperature since November 28. Wind speeds of up to 20 kilometers per hour contributed to the low temperature and clear skies on Sunday, but the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a further dip in the minimum temperature in the coming week, with foggy mornings expected.

On Saturday, the minimum temperature was recorded at 8.5 degrees Celsius, and the maximum settled at 25.3 degrees. The IMD expects the wind speed to decrease in the coming week. While the air quality in Delhi marginally improved on Sunday, it remained within the “very poor” category, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 314 at 4 pm IST. The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology forecasts that the air quality in Delhi will likely remain in the very poor category until Thursday.

According to the IITM weather forecast, the outlook for the subsequent six days indicates that the air quality will remain in the very poor to poor category. The predominant surface wind is expected to come from the northwest directions in Delhi, with a wind speed of 4-8 km/h, mainly clear skies, and shallow fog in the morning on Monday.

The IMD reported that the maximum and minimum temperatures on Monday are expected to settle at 23 and 6.5 degrees Celsius, respectively. In the coming week, the maximum temperature will range between 22 to 23 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature might fall to 6 degrees Celsius.

The IITM weather bulletin for Delhi mentioned that the ventilation index on Monday would be 1,800 sq meters per second. For Tuesday and Wednesday, it is expected to be 1,500 and 3,300 sq meters per second, respectively. The Central Pollution Control Board reported a PM2.5 level of 125.5 micrograms per cubic meter on Sunday at 6 pm, compared to 135.5 micrograms per cubic meter on Saturday.
