Kerala is grappling with a significant increase in suicide cases, according to the latest report from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The state witnessed a troubling surge, reporting over 10,000 suicides in 2022, signaling a disturbing trend since 2020. According to the NCRB’s 2022 report, Kerala secured the fourth position in the country in terms of suicide rate, trailing behind Sikkim, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and Puducherry, with an incidence rate of 28.5 suicides per lakh of the population.
The data from NCRB reveals a concerning trajectory, with the number of suicides in Kerala escalating from 8,500 in 2020 to 9,549 in 2021 and further spiking to 10,162 in 2022. Among the cities within the state, Thrissur topped the list with 489 suicides in 2022, followed by Kollam with 472 reported suicides. Additionally, Kerala ranked first in suicide rates among unemployed individuals, registering 2,204 deaths per 1 lakh people, and secured the fourth position in suicides by individuals engaged in private sector enterprises, with 1,004 suicides per 1 lakh of the population.
