Korean star Woodz to enlist in his country’s military

Korean star Woodz, whose real name is Cho Seung-youn, has announced that he will soon be enlisting in the military, taking a break from his music career. In a letter to his fans, known as MOODZ, Woodz informed them that he will be serving in the military from January 22, 2024. He expressed gratitude for the nearly 10 years since his debut, filled with precious and happy memories made with his fans. Woodz pledged to do his utmost in his military duty as Cho Seung Youn and promised to return healthier.

Woodz rose to fame as a rapper and vocalist in the South Korean-Chinese boy band Uniq, formed in 2014. He co-founded M.O.L.A in 2015, Drinkcolor in 2016, and his production team, Team HOW, in 2018. In 2019, Woodz participated in the South Korean survival show Produce X 101. He resumed his solo career in 2020 with the single “Love Me Harder.”

The mandatory military enlistment rules in South Korea have been in the spotlight, affecting popular K-pop band BTS members. SUGA started his mandatory public service in September, while J-hope serves as an assistant instructor. Jimin and Jungkook are preparing to join the Army’s 5th Infantry Division boot camp, with Jin already working there as an assistant trainer. Jimin and Jungkook are set to commence basic training on December 12. The members of BTS are fulfilling their military service obligations, impacting their musical careers temporarily.
