NCRB report attributes 80% of accidents in Andhra Pradesh to overspeeding

In 2022, over 80% of road accidents in Vijayawada were attributed to overspeeding and reckless driving, as per a report by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The study indicated a 25% increase in accidents in the city, with 1,543 reported in 2022 compared to 1,228 in 2021. However, the overall number of road accidents in the state decreased by 3% in 2022, with 21,070 cases compared to 21,556 in 2021. The majority of accidents occurred between 6 pm and 9 pm, and overspeeding emerged as the primary cause. The report noted a 15% rise in fatalities, resulting in 418 deaths and 1,367 injuries in 2022. June had the highest number of accidents (155), followed by May (149) and August (145). The data also highlighted that most accidents occurred on national highways passing through the city, with 706 accidents causing 623 fatalities, while 676 accidents on city and other roads resulted in 608 deaths. The NTR district commissioner of police emphasized the focus on enforcing traffic rules and conducting awareness drives to reduce road accidents. Special efforts target overspeeding, drunk driving, wrong-way driving, and distracted driving, implementing a zero-tolerance policy for these risky behaviors.
