Stephen Colbert has made a triumphant return to hosting The Late Show after taking a three-week break to recover from corrective surgery for a ruptured appendix. Colbert, visibly weaker and having shed some pounds, shared the details of his health scare with the audience, recounting the symptoms that led to his diagnosis.
Colbert’s ordeal began after wrapping up a shooting schedule that included an interview with David Letterman. Despite feeling unwell, he initially attributed it to potential exposure to something from Letterman’s beard. However, the following morning, he experienced severe abdominal pain, prompting a rush to the hospital.
Describing the pain as manageable only when not moving, Colbert powered through two monologues, two-second acts, and a lengthy interview with Bradley Cooper before seeking medical attention. It was during a cooking segment with José Andrés that Colbert faced an unexpected challenge. He humorously recalled, “At the end of it, he spontaneously grabbed me to dance with him afterward.”
Reflecting on the experience, Colbert expressed gratitude for the medical team’s swift action and highlighted the love and support he received during his recovery. He stated, “I want to thank all the healthcare workers at Montefiore Medical Center. They were just lovely. They took care of me. I want to thank everybody who sent messages of support, and I want to thank everybody who helped me heal. Except for José Andrés!”
Colbert’s return to hosting was met with applause and warmth from the audience, marking a positive and resilient comeback after a challenging health episode.
