Tragedy struck on Wednesday at 11 pm when a minibus carrying Sabarimala pilgrims from Pondicherry overturned and plunged into a gorge near Kottayam district in Melukavu village. The accident claimed the life of Arumughan, a 48-year-old resident of Pondicherry.
According to Melukavu police, the incident occurred at Chalamattom on the Thodupuzha-Erattupetta road. The minibus, en route to Sabarimala, lost control, resulting in its descent into the gorge. Arumughan and several other injured passengers were swiftly taken to Kottayam Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday.
The overturned bus received immediate attention from the police, who arrived promptly at the accident site. At the time of the mishap, around 20 pilgrims, including children, were on board. Police confirmed that the remaining passengers were in stable condition after being transported to the hospital for medical care.
