Opposition protests over security breach; Lok Sabha adjournment till 2 pm

Thursday’s Lok Sabha proceedings were disrupted and adjourned until 2 pm as Opposition members vociferously demanded a government statement on the security breach in the House. Speaker Om Birla clarified that the Lok Sabha Secretariat is responsible for the security matters of the House. Despite this, Opposition members persisted in their demand for a government statement, leading to the adjournment.

During the disrupted proceedings, only two questions and their supplementary questions were addressed during the 15-minute Question Hour. The disruption occurred in the wake of a significant security breach on Wednesday, the anniversary of the 2001 Parliament terror attack. Two individuals, Sagar Sharma and Manoranjan D, breached security, entered the Lok Sabha chamber from the public gallery during Zero Hour, released yellow gas, and shouted slogans before being overpowered by MPs.

Opposition members continued their protest on Thursday by raising slogans, insisting on a government statement on the Parliament security breach. Speaker Om Birla reiterated that the Lok Sabha Secretariat is responsible for the security of the Parliament complex. Union Minister Rajnath Singh addressed the House, emphasizing the need to condemn such incidents and caution against disturbances in the House. He noted past incidents of disruptions in the old building and urged against creating disturbances during proceedings.
