Neelam, one of the two individuals arrested for protesting outside Parliament, has a history of involvement in various demonstrations, including the farmers’ movement, according to her family. Saraswati Devi, Neelam’s mother, learned about the incident through the media at their home in Ghaso Khurd village in Haryana’s Jind. The protesters, including Neelam, had sprayed colored gas outside the Parliament while chanting the slogan ‘tanashahi nahi chalegi’ before being detained by Delhi Police.
Neelam, aged 35, had been residing in a Hisar PG accommodation for the past five months, preparing for competitive exams, as revealed by her brother, Ram Niwas. Despite having cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET), Neelam’s active participation in the farmers’ protest was not disclosed during her recent visit to the village.
Her family speculates that Neelam might have taken such actions to secure employment. Saraswati Devi expressed surprise, stating she had spoken to Neelam earlier that day but was unaware of her trip to Delhi. Neelam’s family emphasized her educational qualifications, including a Master’s, MEd, and MPhil, and noted her previous involvement in demonstrations against issues such as unemployment.
Neelam’s father, Kohar Singh, works as a confectioner in Uchana Mandi, and the family suggests that her activism might have been driven by a desire for social change.
