Prominent Congress leader and former minister K P Viswanathan, aged 83, passed away on Friday. Noteworthy for his tenure as the Minister for Forests & Wildlife from 1991-1994 and 2004-2005, Viswanathan was born on April 22, 1940, to Kallayil Pangan and Parukutty in Kunnamkulam taluk of Thrissur district. After completing his primary education, he graduated from Kerala Varma College, Thrissur, and pursued a career as a lawyer.
Commencing his political journey through the Youth Congress, Viswanathan held the position of Thrissur District President of the Youth Congress from 1967 to 1970. His electoral victories include the Assembly elections from Kunnamkulam in 1977, 1980, and 1987, as well as triumphs in the Kodakara constituency in 1987, 1991, 1996, and 2001. Despite his efforts in the 2006 and 2011 assembly elections from Kodakara, he faced defeat against C Ravindranath of the CPM. Viswanathan’s contributions extended beyond politics, as evidenced by his roles such as President of the Thrissur District Co-Operative Bank (1972), membership in various committees and boards, and service as Secretary of the Congress Parliamentary Party (1980) and the DCC, Thrissur (1970-87).
